On June 17, the conference on “Civil Identity: Unity in Diversity. The Role of Media, Government and Society” will be held in BishkekThe event has been organized by the School of Peacemaking and Media Technology of the "Network of Social Mediators” Public Foundation funded by the Freedom of Information Program of Soros Foundation – Kyrgyzstan as part of the Encouraging Diversity through Media project.


The participants of the forum will be Mira Karybaeva, head of the department of ethnic, religious policy and interaction with the civil society of the Kyrgyz Republic Presidential Administration; Naken Kasiev, director of State Agency for local self-governance and inter-ethnic relations; Ainura Temirbekova, deputy minister of Culture, Information and Tourism; heads of leading capital and regional TV and radio companies, news agencies and online outlets, reporters, representatives of ethnic communities, scientific, expert and donor communities.


The conference agenda contains more than 15 reports and presentations on urgent issues of ethnic and language diversity reporting in the Kyrgyz media. The speeches will be dedicated to the state policy issues in the field of public awareness of multicultural diversity, the role of the media in spreading ideas of civil identity and interethnic tolerance, improving access to information in ethnic group languages, media education.


The conference will be the forum for open dialog between decision-makers, reporters, representatives of ethnic communities, and experts. During discussion, all parties concerned will develop tools to raise public awareness of diversity issues, increase of ethnic content in various languages, strengthening motivation of the media to promote diversity concept in the Kyrgyz Republic.


The Encouraging Diversity through Media project is focused on the development of diversity content, strengthening of constructive role of the media in interethnic dialog, improvement of professional skills of reporters when reporting on cultural, language, religious, ethnic diversity issues.
